The top AI development companies to consider in 2026 depend on the work you need done: global consultancies such as Accenture and IBM Consulting for enterprise-wide transformation, large engineering services firms such as EPAM Systems, Globant, and Thoughtworks for multi-team build programs, AI-first specialists such as Quantiphi and Fractal, embedded or mid-size delivery teams such as Tribe AI and Sphere for a defined production build, and nearshore providers such as BairesDev for added engineering capacity. No firm is the best choice for every buyer, so match the type of firm to the job before comparing names.
This shortlist explains how we chose the firms, what each one says it does, and when each type fits. Sphere, which publishes this article, is one of the firms on it; to see how we approach this work, read about Sphere's AI development services. The disclosure and method below explain how we kept the list fair.
Sphere publishes this article and is listed in it. We placed Sphere in the group that matches its delivery model and described it with the same kind of facts as every other firm. This is a starting shortlist, not an objective ranking, and no firm paid or asked to be included.
How Did We Choose These AI Development Companies?
Most "top AI development companies" lists rank firms on criteria they never state. We used four rules instead:
- AI development is a stated service. Each firm describes AI, generative AI, or AI engineering services on its own website.
- The firm builds for clients. We included firms that design and deliver systems for other companies, not tool vendors or model developers. For the platforms these firms build on, see our comparison of AI development platforms.
- Each group covers a different way to buy. The groups run from enterprise-wide transformation to added capacity, so a buyer can find the type that fits before comparing names.
- Only published facts. Every description uses what the firm states on its own website, linked in the text and in the sources at the end. We did not assign scores, ratings, or ranks. Firms appear alphabetically within each group, and groups are ordered by typical engagement scale, not quality.
The list is not exhaustive. Many capable firms are not on it, and some that are may not suit your project. Use it to understand the market, then test any firm against the criteria in the last section.
Which Global Consultancies Build AI for Enterprises?
These firms suit programs where AI is one part of a wider change in operating model, processes, and systems across many business units.
Accenture
Accenture (opens in new tab) lists artificial intelligence and data among its core services, alongside cloud, cybersecurity, and transformation work, and runs a responsible AI practice. It reports more than 9,000 clients across more than 120 countries. Consider it when AI is one stream in an enterprise-wide transformation that also needs change management and large-scale systems integration.
IBM Consulting
IBM Consulting (opens in new tab) describes AI services that cover strategy, data, architecture, security, and governance, and says it designs, builds, and scales AI and agentic AI solutions. It states that it has more than 75,000 consultants trained in generative AI. Consider it for large programs where one partner must carry strategy, governance, and integration across an existing enterprise estate.
Which Engineering Services Firms Handle Large AI Build Programs?
These firms bring deep engineering benches and suit AI work that sits inside large product, platform, or modernization programs with several teams.
EPAM Systems
EPAM Systems (opens in new tab) describes itself as a global leader in AI transformation engineering and integrated consulting, with more than thirty years of custom software, product, and platform engineering. It is headquartered in Newtown, Pennsylvania, and lists locations in more than 55 countries and regions. Consider it when AI features must be built into a large product or platform engineering effort.
Globant
Globant (opens in new tab) says it creates digitally native products and draws on its AI expertise, and reported more than 31,100 employees in 36 countries in June 2025. That year it introduced AI Pods, a subscription model for AI-powered engineering, product definition, design, and testing, delivered by agentic AI supervised by Globant experts. Consider it for large digital product programs, especially if a subscription-style delivery model appeals.
Thoughtworks
Thoughtworks (opens in new tab) describes itself as a global technology consultancy that blends design, engineering, and AI expertise. It was founded in Chicago in 1993 and reports 47 offices in 18 countries. Its offerings include AI/works, an agentic development platform, and Agent/works, a platform for governing and running AI agents. Consider it when engineering practice and modernization matter as much as the AI feature itself.
Which AI-First Firms Specialize in AI, Data, and Cloud?
These firms have built their whole practice around AI and data, which suits buyers who want depth in models, data engineering, and applied AI rather than broad IT services.
Fractal
Fractal (opens in new tab) was founded in 2000 and says it provides end-to-end AI solutions and enterprise-grade AI platforms, with the stated aim of powering decisions across the enterprise through AI, engineering, and design. Consider it when the goal is AI-driven decision support across large enterprise datasets.
Quantiphi
Quantiphi (opens in new tab) describes itself as an AI-first digital engineering company and has been operating since 2013, combining industry experience, cloud and data engineering, and AI research. Its website (opens in new tab) lists services including conversational AI, document AI, generative AI, and agentic AI. Consider it when you want a firm whose entire practice centers on AI, data, and cloud engineering.
Which Firms Embed a Senior Team for a Defined AI Build?
These firms suit a specific system that has to reach production with one accountable team, often working alongside your own engineers.
Sphere (publisher of this article)
Sphere is an AI development and digital engineering company with 21 years of delivery experience and more than 100 AI, data, and engineering professionals. It designs, builds, integrates, and operates AI systems, including enterprise RAG and knowledge systems, AI agents, generative AI applications, and predictive machine learning, and structures delivery so the client owns the resulting code, architecture, and documentation. Sphere holds a 4.9/5 rating on Clutch, and its technology partners include AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Databricks, and Snowflake.
As one example, Sphere took a jurisdiction-aware enterprise RAG system for an international tax advisory firm from kickoff to production in five weeks, with retrieval accuracy 66% better than the firm's previous keyword search (enterprise RAG case study). Consider Sphere when you need one team to take a defined AI system to production inside your environment, or a senior delivery pod to work alongside your own team.
Tribe AI
Tribe AI (opens in new tab) says it works through forward-deployed engineers who own a problem end to end, embedding inside client organizations and staying until the system is in production. It lists offices in New York, San Francisco, and Lisbon. Consider it when you want a small senior team embedded with yours on a specific deployment.
Which Firms Add AI Engineering Capacity?
These firms suit buyers who already have AI direction in-house and need more engineers to execute it.
BairesDev
BairesDev (opens in new tab) was founded in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2009 and offers staff augmentation, dedicated teams, software outsourcing, and AI development. It says more than 4,000 people work with it from over 40 countries. Consider it when your own leaders own the architecture and you need to add engineers quickly. Our guide to software staff augmentation explains when that model works and when it does not.
Which Type of AI Development Company Fits Your Project?
The table summarizes the trade-offs. Most buyers can rule out two or three groups before speaking to anyone.
| Firm type | Best fit | Watch for | On this list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global consultancy | AI inside enterprise-wide transformation | Who staffs the build after the strategy phase | Accenture, IBM Consulting |
| Engineering services firm | AI features in large product or platform programs | Minimum engagement size and which team is assigned | EPAM Systems, Globant, Thoughtworks |
| AI-first specialist | Model, data, and applied AI depth | Integration with your wider software estate | Fractal, Quantiphi |
| Embedded or mid-size team | One defined system taken to production | Capacity for very large, multi-stream programs | Sphere, Tribe AI |
| Capacity provider | More engineers under your own AI leadership | You own architecture, evaluation, and delivery risk | BairesDev |
How Should You Choose From This List?
A shortlist only helps if you know what you are buying. Work through these steps before you send a request for proposal:
- Define the system and its owner. Name the workflow, the users, the measure that should improve, and who inside your company will own the system after launch. If you cannot yet, start with an AI consulting engagement rather than a build.
- Pick the firm type. Use the table above to choose one or two groups. If the system will act inside your business tools, read our comparison of AI agent development services and in-house builds first.
- Shortlist two or three firms. Ask each for a production system similar to yours and the names of the people who would build it.
- Test with your data. A short paid discovery or proof on your real documents and systems tells you more than any proposal.
- Settle ownership and exit terms. Agree who owns the code, prompts, evaluation sets, and runbooks before work starts.
