The client and the brief
A growth and acquisition platform asked Sphere to build an HR platform where employees can see and customise their own health insurance policies.
The client is a growth and acquisition platform that provides owners and management with operational expertise.
The scope of the project was to create an HR platform with an option to manage and customise employees' health insurance policies. The platform was to be created from scratch.
Sphere's team was a cross-functional group of developers embedded into the client's own dev team. It finished work on the first two stages of the project — company registration in the system, and insurance policy cost calculation for the company.
The embedded team
A cross-functional group of specialists working inside the client's own development team.
An architect, three Go backend engineers and three React frontend engineers.
A project manager, a business analyst and a designer.
A manual QA engineer and an automation QA engineer.
DevOps and a database specialist, pulled in as the work required.
Integration challenges
The main challenges involved a large number of integrations with external services, each owning a different part of the benefits picture.
Ideon API
Provided access to the US nationwide database of companies and medical insurance policies.
Auth0
Authentication provider and a platform to manage users.
Gradient Analytics
Analysed user data and accepted uploaded user data — age, residential address, insurance policy. The service returned the coefficient for a company based on the number of employees and the types of medical insurance plans the company uses.
Finch
Data transfer between HR platforms. Companies could choose between automatic upload of data — age, insurance policy — or manual upload of a CSV file. Auto-detection by name and data import highlighted incorrect data immediately, giving the opportunity to amend it.
Nayya
Customisation of health insurance policies.
PrismHR
Used as the core for the HR platform.
What the Sphere team delivered
The goal was a platform where HR managers can manage HR tasks and employees can see their health insurance policy and customise it to their needs, including upgrading it for an additional price. Sphere delivered the first stage.
Company registration
Registering a company involved uploading the number of employees, all required paperwork, and the type of health insurance policy held by each employee.
Insurance policy cost calculation
Price calculation for a company, driven by the coefficient returned from Gradient Analytics based on the number of employees and the types of medical insurance plans the company uses.
What came next
The next step was the development of onboarding and admin interfaces. Data on each company and its employees would be uploaded, and the interface would suggest quotes for each company — helping surface an insurance plan that is more financially beneficial to the company.
